Birmingham, England To Celebrate Ozzy Osbourne Day (5/17/2006)

Ozzy occupies such a big place in Brummies' hearts the city is dedicating a whole day to him reports icBirmingham.co.uk. The event is being put on in response to public demand and there will be air guitar contests as well as an Ozzy trivia test.

There'll even be a bat trail as one of the attractions of Ozzy Osbourne Day on Sunday at Aston Hall, just a stone's throw from where the Black Sabbath legend grew up.

Coun John Alden, the council's sport, leisure and culture chief, said: "It was visitors to Aston Hall who suggested putting together an Ozzy Osbourne Day and I am delighted that we have been able to respond with this event.

"Aston Hall demonstrates the deep and rich heritage of this area of Birmingham, but it is also important to recognise the recent additions to the area's history, including Ozzy Osbourne."

Visitors will be able to improve their knowledge of Ozzy by studying a display of his life, his influence on the world of heavy metal and his connections with Aston.

It's a far cry from the days when he was brought up as John Osbourne in a tiny terraced house in Lodge Road, Aston, from where he would bunk off school at Birchfield Road Secondary Modern.

After a series of petty crime episodes he ended up serving three months in Winson Green jail after his dad John senior refused to bail his tearaway son.

Ozzy said since that his prison experience drove him away from crime once and for all.

He tried his hand at a variety of different jobs including working in a slaughterhouse, a funeral home and as a horn tester in the local Lucas car factory before becoming a world-famous rock star and star of his own family TV reality show.
